NBA Midseason Awards

We are about halfway into the NBA season so we have a good grasp on who is in the running for each award. Today I will give my current winners for MVP, DPOY, and ROY. These are all my opinions and can change in a heartbeat depending on what happens, but I will do my best to predict them as if my life depends on it😭. I will give my top 3 and my winner for each award.

MVP🥇

• Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

• Nikola Jokic

• Joel Embiid

Out of the three of these, Embiid has the best counting stats with almost 35 ppg and 11 rpg, but he has only played in 28 games out of 40 possible. So that rules him out for me. If he fails to meet the new 65-game minimum to win, he also will be out for the voters (he is on pace to miss that threshold).

Jokic is still doing Jokic-type things averaging 29 ppg, 9 mpg, and 12 rpg. Almost a triple-double, and his team is second in the west right now. He is the king of advanced stats and is still a top 5 player in the league.

SGA is on a tear. I feel like every day I see a TikTok with Shai highlights of him torching whoever is guarding him. His shot-making/creating is so smooth and he makes it look so effortless. If there is anybody on Earth I could swap lives with it would be Shai 10/10 times (Wyatt agrees). He is averaging a career-high with better efficiency than he did last year, and he is WINNING like never before. The OKC Thunder are currently 3rd in the West as far as records but are first in power rankings according to the NBA’s Instagram.

With that being said…Nikola Jokic is my MVP. But if Shai wins, I would be just as happy.

As much as I dislike Rudy Gobert, he is a defensive anchor. After a down year last year, he has found his role on the T Wolves and is excelling. It is up there for the best years in his career on both sides of the ball. But we only care about defense. He is putting up over 2 blocks and 12 rebounds a night. But the thing about defense is it is an eye test thing more than a statistic thing. He is one of the major factors to the current #1 seed in the West.

Anthony Davis is finally being the defensive beast that he is supposed to be. He is putting up 2.5 blocks and 12 rebounds a night as well as his offensive play. He is so good at roaming against teams with a stretched offense that it makes scoring on cuts and backside screens so difficult. He is switchable to pretty much all 5 positions and that alone puts him in the conversation.

Chet Chet Chet. I would have never thought he would be this dominant at such a young age because of his frame. Yes, he is tall but he is still a frail-looking guy he is not afraid of a challenge. Also averaging two and a half blocks. He is a huge reason for the Thunder’s major jump this season and he is showing a great future in this league. Hoping he doesn’t get hurt anymore.

And the DPOTY is….Rudy Gobert for the 4th time in his career.

For sake of your time, remember what I said about Chet for DPOTY. That is the main reason he is here, along with 17 points on about 55% true shooting. He is a DOG

Vic was the obvious answer in the pre season, and still has a great chance to wein, but he is going to need the ball in his hands more. He does not get the amount of touches he deserves to showcase his skill day in and day out. If he gats a true point guard, or if his team gives him the ball more, consider him a lock for this award.

Watching Jaime in college reminded me of a Miami Heat, hustle guy who does all the right things. he does not excel at much but he doesn’t lack anything either. I kinda had a feeling he would be very good considering he was an older rookie and was going to the Heat, a team known for bringing out the best in players.

The BRB Rookie of the Year is…Chet Holmgren!
